Hamburg ist eine sehr ansprechende Stadt, mit Hafen, Reeperbahn, St. Pauli, Blankenese usw. Vor allem aber bietet die Hansestadt viele Clubs, in denen den Rockfans Konzerte jeglicher Art geboten werden. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass dort auch so großartige Musiker wie Raimund Burke zu Hause sind.
Als ich nun seinen dritten Tonträger in den Händen hielt, um diesen zu begutachten, checkte ich erstmal das Begleitheftchen. Aufgeschlagen entdeckte ich im Inneren eine Vier-Mann-Combo, bestehend aus Raimund Burke, Burke, Burke und noch mal Burke! Wie bitte? In der Tat hat der Instrumentalist sein Album komplett allein eingespielt! Er hat selbst komponiert, arrangiert, wie bereits erwähnt alle Instrumente eingespielt, programmiert, aufgenommen, abgemischt und produziert. Nur für die Vocals hat er sich Michael Keuter ins Boot geholt. Auch um seine Website und den Vertrieb seiner Silberlinge kümmert er sich selbst!
Sofort wird mein CD-Player mit dem Scheibchen von diesem Tausendsassa gefüttert und spuckt als erstes “Beautiful Sin” aus. Diesen Song hat er zwar ursprünglich für Uli Kusch geschrieben, doch gefiel ihm der Track dann doch so gut, dass er ihn als Instrumentalsong auch auf seinem eigenen Album verewigt hat! Wow! Die Melodien erinnern mich sofort an Joe Satriani! Das wiederholt sich beim darauffolgenden Song “Off Highway”, der noch etwas rhythmischer rüberkommt, und ich wundere mich, dass ich nicht schon längst was von dem 39-jährigen Hanseaten gehört habe. “Stil Searching” wird von einem Piano eröffnet, dazu wirft Raimund herrliche Riffs, einen pumpenden Bass, schlagstarke Drums in seinen Mixer. Fertig ist der spielstarke instrumentale Hard Rock.
Eine ausdrucksstarke Melodie begleitet “Rain Of My Heart”, die für mich als Ballade mit leichten Blues Rock-Anleihen bewertet wird, bei der selbst ein Gary Moore seine Freude hätte! Irgendwie klar, dass auch “Caged” ein ganz starker Song ist, den der Norddeutsche mit leichten Metal-Einflüssen gewürzt hat. Und immer wieder das geniale Gitarrenspiel von Burke, das besonders herausragt! Die ersten Riffs von “Look Forward” sind durchaus mit AC/DCs “Thunderstruck” vergleichbar, bis er dann doch eher im Stile von Steve Vai wieder völlig abdreht. Burke beackert seinen Sechssaiter mit Schallgeschwindigkeit und erzeugt zum Teil solch skurrile Töne, die nur von Meisterhand erzeugt werden können! Nach “Rough Riff”, einer weiteren Demonstration des Könnens von Burke, folgt das Highlight des Longplayers! In 9 ½ Minuten wird der Titelsong “Into My Arena” in allen erdenklichen Gitarrenskills mit äußerst harmonischen Melodien zelebriert. Burke beweist, dass es gut möglich ist, eingängige, nachvollziehbare Gitarrenkunst mit Stilen des Hard Rocks, Metal, instrumentalem Rock und einen Schuss Blues zu mischen. Mal mit Hochgeschwindigkeit, dann eher als Ballade verkleidet, in diesem Song fehlt es an Nichts. Zudem finde ich noch die Schlagzeugqualitäten von Raimund bemerkenswert, bärenstark!
“Don’t You Know” hämmert so richtig aus den Boxen, da passt der Gesang von Michael Keuter wie die Faust aufs Auge. Meine Güte, Burke hat also auch bei den Vocals auf sehr hohe Qualität wert gelegt. Diesen Gala-Song könnte man durchaus mit Europe vergleichen, wobei ich allerdings bezweifle, ob die Stromgitarren von denen an die von Burke herankommen. Auch “Wait For The Night” besticht durch Keuters Stimmchen und schließt sich dem vorherigen Track nahtlos an. Zwei sehr starke Hard Rock-Nummern!
Nachdem mich das bisher Gehörte voll zufrieden stellte, lässt Raimund das Album mit “J.A.I.LS” an einer Akustikklampfe auslaufen und setzt noch mal ein Ausrufezeichen!
Fazit: Das Album groovt mächtig ab! Im Stile von Satriani, Gary Moore, Steve Vai und Michael Schenker, hat Burke bewiesen, dass er im Olymp der ganz großen Virtuosen am Sechssaiter anzusiedeln ist. Sein Gitarrenspektakel lässt keine Wünsche offen. Und wer kann sich schon den Luxus leisten, seinen eigenen Drummer, Bassisten oder Keyborder selbst zu ersetzen? Wer auf exzellentes, facettenreiches Gitarrenspiel steht, dem kann ich den Erwerb des Tonträgers nicht nur empfehlen, sondern ich muss es verordnen!

Ich bin ja der letzte der auf Instrumental Alben abfährt aber was „Raimund Burke“ auf seinem neuen Album „Into my Arena“ zeigt ist wirklich ganz grosses Kino. „Burke“ kann auf eine lange Karriere zurückblicken die im Jahr 1984 begann. Obwohl er nie in einer grossen Band gespielt hat, beweist der Ausnahme Gitarrist der hier alle Instrumente selber eingespielt hat aus welchem Holz er geschnitzt ist. Fast schon unglaublich dass sich keine hochkarätige Truppe um den Musiker bemüht hat, denn was man hier um die Lauscher geballert kriegt ist wirklich galaktisch. Die Scheibe hört sich wie aus einem Guss an, kein Ego Gefiedel sondern gefühlsvolle Musik direkt aus dem grossen Herzen von „Raimund Burke“. Songs wie „Beautiful Sin“ oder das das fantastisch abwechslungsreiche „Still Searching“ sind unglaublich stark und unterstreichen das Niveau dieses exzellenten Musikers. Instrumental Alben nerven mich ansonsten da ich wirklich nicht scharf darauf bin Ego Mucke zu hören, es sei denn der grosse „Malmsteen“ ist am Werk aber der hat schon in den 80er kapiert dass er ohne Sänger auf Dauer nicht auskommt. „Rain of my Heart“ ist ein weiterer High Class Track der auf der Zunge zergeht und mit einem Gefühl gespielt wird welches Engelsgleich klingt. Ganz ohne Sänger ist auch „Burke“ nicht unterwegs, beim Titeltrack „Into my Arena“ hört man nämlich die Vocals eines gewissen „Michael Reuter“ der die Mucke exquisit unterstützt. Ich kann nur sagen dass die Scheibe einfach nur geil klingt und auch für solche Fans taugt die nicht auf Instrumental Rock/Metal abfahren.

Herrschaftszeiten! Wieder so ein Egofrickler, der uns mit einem komplett in Eigenarbeit entstandenen Album versucht bei Laune zu halten. An anderer Stelle schrieb ich schon einmal, dass mir solche Typen tierisch auf den Senkel gehen. Das werden in der Regel solche Alben, bei denen der allein herrschende Musiker alles alleine machen muss, weil der Rest der Welt sowieso nicht gut genug ist, um seine flinken Finger, seine kruden Ideen und wat nich noch allet [Ruhrpott; Red.] entsprechend zu würdigen.
Aber Obacht: Regeln sind da um gebrochen zu werden. Und genau das tut Raimund Burke aus Hamburg. Bei dieser Stadt fallen einem Bandnamen wie GAMMA RAY, HELLOWEEN, IRON SAVIOR und ähnliche Konsorten ein [mir fallen zum Beispiel noch KICKHUNTER ein; Jogi].
Damit wären wir zumindest schon in der richtigen Stilrichtung gelandet. Was uns der sympathische Untervierziger von der Elbe in den CD-Player legt ist Metal. Allerdings fast ohne Gesang. Das wiederum kennt man dann wieder von seinen Kollegen wie Joe Satriani (der ungeschlagene Meister!) [sehe ich ganz anders; Jogi], Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore und andere. Hinter denen muss sich Mr. Burke (dessen Name so “untrue Metal” klingt wie Heidi Horror ist) keinesfalls verstecken. Sicherlich geht es hier auf den Bünden der Gitarre rauf und runter, und das auch nicht gerade in langsamer Geschwindigkeit, aber es ist nicht einfach nur ein Drauflosgerase, vielmehr versteht es RB seiner 6-Saitigen Geschichten zu entlocken. Die Gitarre singt! Schon mit dem Opener hat er mich gefangen: Beautiful Sin war eine Anfrage von Uli Kusch (der, der bei HELLOWEEN schon hinter der Schießbude saß), doch einen Song für seine Band zu schreiben. Gesagt, getan – und für so gut befunden, dass er in der instrumentalen Variante nun erstmal hier seinen Platz gefunden hat.
Für mich das nächste Highlight ist Still Searching. Mit leichtem Pianoeinstieg geht’s los, bleibt aber erstaunlicherweise nicht im Balladesken, sondern weiß durch Abwechslung und einem interessanten Aufbau zu fesseln. Dazwischen kommen keine Ausfälle, aber nicht jeder Song bleibt sofort und nachhaltig hängen. Der nächste Track, der dies jedoch eindrucksvoll kann ist Rough Riff, was uns von Raimund in bester Breitsaite aus den Boxen um die Ohren gehauen wird. Klasse, der Stilmix aus den o. g. Saitenhexern, gewürzt mit einer Prise Moore/Blackmore – das hat was.
Into My Arena kommt danach nicht nur das Titelstück, sondern mit 9:32 Minuten auch das längste Teil seit DUPLO-Schokoriegel. Heftig rockt sich das Stück durch die Rillen des Kunststoffs, Gitarren duellieren sich im Paarlauf, bratende Orgeln verleihen leichten 70er-Jahre-Touch. Nach knapp 7 Minuten wird kurz zum Luftholen die Akustische aus der Ecke geholt, um eine Minute später mit VAN HALENlikem Tapping auf die Zielgerade zuzusteuern. Perfekt!
Keine Langeweile und keinesfalls das Gefühl, dass das einer alleine spielt. Eher wirkt die ganze Scheibe (und nicht nur das Titelstück) wie das Zusammenspiel einer perfekt harmonisierenden Band. Wieso ist eigentlich noch keiner auf die langhaarige Allzweckwaffe aufmerksam geworden?
Bei Don’t You Know und Wait For The Night wurde es dem Hanseaten dann scheinbar zu einsam im Studio und er hat sich mit Michael Keuter einen Sänger dazugeholt, der mich sehr an Gary Moore zu seinen hartrockenden Zeiten erinnert. Mit J.a.I.Ls. geht schlussendlich eine unterhaltsame Stunde zu Ende.
Als Fazit bleibt wiederholend festzuhalten, dass sich Raimund Burke hinter den Marktführern des instrumentalen Metalgefrickels nicht zu verstecken braucht. Sicherlich fehlt es noch, um an einen Joe Satriani oder auch Vinnie Moore ranzukommen, aber so groß sind die Welten zwischen den Saitenflitzern nicht. Vor Leuten, denen es gelingt, ein solches Album im Alleingang einzuspielen, zu produzieren, zu bewerben, zu vertreiben und dabei nicht ansatzweise den Eindruck eines Dilettanten zu hinterlassen, ziehe ich meinen Hut.
Hier sollten übrigens nicht nur Gitarrenfetischisten ein Ohr riskieren. Und ein Besuch auf der Homepage lohnt sich, die ist übersichtlich und angenehm einfach gestaltet, wirkt dabei aber nicht billig und zeigt auch ein wenig von der witzigen Saite des Hamburgers.

Raimund Burke is a German hard rock & metal musician who plays a lot of instruments. His second solo album entitled “Into My Arena” is the follow up to 2006’s “Get It” album, which earned him a lot of praise and great reviews. Raimund is clearly a guitar virtuoso and masters all guitar techniques with ease, additionally and surprisingly he is also a remarkably good keyboardist and a competent drummer as well. “Into My Arena” is entirely Raimund’s baby seeing he did all composing, arranging, playing all instruments, programming, mixing and recording. Even artwork, website and distribution duties are being taken care of by this very talented musician. Fortunately, the lack of drum computers – which many solo artists tend to use – results in a truly heartfelt and sincere compositions and gives this album a cohesive feel, one can basically feel Raimund’s hunger for melodies that are full of warmth and emotion.
Usually solo albums made by guitar wizards most often mainly appeal to established musicians and not the average man on the street. Michael Angelo Batio and Yngwie Malmsteen are examples of fast shredders that have often been criticised because they “don’t play with any feeling” and “use the same scales all over again”. “Into My Arena” though is a good example of how to combine guitar prowess with harmonized and melodic song structures, without going over the edge of showing off. Raimund Burke’s music is a combination of different styles such as Classical music as well as Rock, Hard-Rock, Heavy-Metal and Progressive Metal. This diversity gives Raimund the great opportunity to use a lot tones through his songs and furthermore allows him to create songs with particular structures and atmospheres. “Off-Highway” is a great example of a song that evokes different feelings of melancholy, joy and happiness. The vivid keyboard playing approach is very DREAM THEATER-ish in style, while happier sounding guitar sections in between give the track a very epic feel in vein of Jason Becker’s “Perspective” album.
“Into My Arena” is an album that is truly diversified. Heavy and up-tempo sections are being succeeded by midpaced and even some balladesque parts. Examples of this are the very beautiful ballads called “Still Searching”, “Caged” and “Rain of My Heart”. These songs feature tons of intense, emotional, heartfelt and brutally powerful guitar solos, which capture an array of human emotions often disheartening but a true portrayal of everyday life. In addition to being a complete guitarist, Raimund Burke from his diverse array of musical influences has developed killer compositional abilities. However, “Into My Arena” isn’t a strictly instrumental album per se, as it features two “bonus tracks” that feature vocal work done by Michael Keuter. The songs “Don’t You Know” and “Wait for the Night” might suggest that Raimund intends to apply more vocals work to his future albums, but incorporating two songs with vocals kind of ruin the overall atmosphere of “Into My Arena”. This is however just a minor nuisance, and “Into My Arena” is heavily recommended for fans of Jason Becker, Joe Satriani, Sergey Atroschenko (ZEROKARMA), Joe Stump and other guitar heroes with awesome song writing skills. On a last note it’s also worth to mention that acclaimed musicians like Jeff Kollmann (GLENN HUGES band, solo), Marco Sfogli (JAMES LABRIE band), Charlie Dominici (DOMINICI,ex-DREAM THEATER) and Uli Kusch (HELLOWEEN, MASTERPLAN, BEAUTIFUL SIN..) already have praised Into my Arena.

As it has always been, ”guitar heroes” come and go. Some of them become legends (Yngwie Malmsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Jason Becker, Sammy Hagar, etc.) – and some others fall into oblivion within a time. I remember especially in the 80s, which seemed to be some sort of a golden period for many of these so-called “guitar heroes” – making their own solo albums and first and foremost, showing a bit of their skills through these particular albums in question. Most of us still remember albums like SPEED METAL SYMPHONY (by Marty Friedman and Jason Becker), or NOT OF THIS EARTH (by Joe Satriani), or MARCHING OUT (by Yngwie Malmsteen) that introduced some of these guitar heroes´ techniques and skills as phenomenons of the hard rock/heavy metal genre.
What has counted to me personally in guitar playing, are different emotions and feelings that one can deliver and incorporate through his/her stuff, and not just showing how technical one’s playing can reach in terms of technical skills and plain guitar mastery only. You can be like a fuckin´ lion on the top of the hill, roaring your guts out, but if you do it without a real feel and emotion, it undoubtedly doesn´t make you convincing enough, does it?
Raimund Burke is a 39-year-old musician from Hamburg, Germany, who started playing guitar in 1984 because his parents couldn´t stand his noisy drum playing in the house at that time. He has also studied guitar playing at Hochschule fuer Musik und darstellende Kunst in Hamburg in 1990 and took part in several different line-ups. In 2005 he recorded his first solo album, titled GET IT, and due to some overwhelming reviews he received of his work on that album, motivated him to continue on his chosen path.
Raimund´s latest work carries the title, INTO MY ARENA, which showcases very well what this talented guitarist is all about: Full of creativity and understanding what it takes to make a pretty impressive sounding solo album all by himself (he plays everything on the album himself; keyboards, drums, bass and both acoustic and electric guitars – only letting Michael Keuter sing in two songs on this release). Raimund may not be one of the most technical wizards around these days, but he has truly got an ear for some relaxed and effortlessly flowing guitar playing that forces your ears to follow and enjoy the rewarding outcome of the album. A variety of different playing styles and techniques is one of Raimund´s strongest assets on INTO MY ARENA, not to mention how he also cleverly adds different music styles into his songs: from classical music to hard rock to heavy metal to progressive rock and metal. He seems to be quite a master at this, and his compositional abilities become very evident the deeper one dives into his song structure.
Raimund´s playing is overall very passionate, full of ever-blooming creativity, he is intense and able to switch from a tight shredding style to more mellow and sensitive sections, allowing himself enough space to keep the songs breathing all the time as they progress. The title track, “Into My Arena”, is over 9-minutes long, an epic musical journey (and my personal fave track off the album, too) that actually includes all these little ingredients of what his music is made of. His sense for some striking solos, all the way virtuoso playing style, the way how he brings up and shows different emotions within his music and brings them to life on through the songs, makes you to raise two thumbs up for him for all his strong achievements on this record.
Raimund´s second album shouldn´t be ignored by anyone who overall loves and can appreciate creativity and talent in making an album like this all alone, and even succeeding in it very well. So, give it a try. Even Jeff Kollman from the Glenn Hughes Band did, and said about the record: “Raimund Burke is a complete guitarist and it shows on his new release INTO MY ARENA. Great Playing!!”.

RAIMUND BURKE, est un guitar hero allemand de trente-neuf ans. Encore mieux, sur son nouvel album « Into my Arena » le teuton a décidé d’enregistrer par lui-même la basse et la batterie, histoire de prouver à tout le monde qu’il en a dans les tripes. Qu’en est-il de cette fameuse « Arène » dans laquelle le père Raimund veut nous guider ?
La première chose que l’on puisse dire c’est que rarement un album de Rock/métal instrumental n’aura aussi bien su mêler virtuosité et efficacité. Impossible de s’ennuyer sur un tel album. Les compositions sont véritablement menées d’une main de maître tant et si bien que l’accroche est permanente. Que ce soit en matière de gros riffs plombés ou de soli à deux cent à l’heure, nous sommes toujours dans une posture ou nous ne pouvons pas décrocher. D’ailleurs, le fait que Raimund Burke joue de tous les instruments est à l’arrivée très important puisque cela nous empêche de tomber dans le piège classique des Guitar heroes, c’est-à-dire, de façon vulgaire : de la branlette de manche. Ainsi, on note un très bon équilibre dans la musique, notamment assuré par les claviers. Ces derniers sont souvent assez psychédéliques et leur folie répond parfaitement aux soli de guitare issus d’un bon vieux Speed-métal. D’ailleurs, certains plans ne sont pas sans nous rappeler quelques grands noms du Métal progressif, entre autres STRATOVARIUS ou DREAM THEATER. En fait, la qualité.
Finalement, ce qu’on retient, c’est l’absence de temps morts. De fait, même les morceaux aux allures de balade comme « Rain of my Heart » contiennent des guitares saturées relativement agressives et jamais les claviers ne tombent dans un registre surorchestral et mielleux. Le Métal de Raimund Burke, bien que mélodique, garde en lui quelque chose de toujours lourd et Rock’n’roll, ce qui fait que même les non fans de progressif et instrumental pourront aisément rentrer dans cet album.
Enfin, j’ouvrirai une parenthèse sur les chansons « Don’t you know » et « Wait for the night ». Ces deux titres ont la particularité de comporter du chant et la voix chaude de Michael Keuter, vraiment profonde et Rock’n’roll est un régal. Mais ce n’est pas la dessus que je veux attirer l’attention, mais sur la démarche artistique. Les textes de ces chansons ont été écrits par la femme de Raimund Burke, d’où une fois de plus, une approche assez personnelle et surtout très émotionnelle. Ce genre d’exemples illustre à nouveau la véritable passion que Raimund Burke met à faire sa musique, or c’est cela qui importe le plus, car c’est cela qui ressort de l’écoute de « Into my arena » : une sorte d’amour, d’énergie positive qui passe à travers un Heavy-métal décapant.
Vous l’aurez compris, un album comme « Into my Arena » est très clairement « la crème de la crème » du Métal instrumental. L’heure d’écoute se fait d’un seul trait et le teuton, pourtant assez modeste, nous offre quelque chose qui est de l’ordre du chef d’œuvre.

Many guitarists have the urgent need of showing off on the technical side but Raimund Burke has the good taste of focusing on groovy riffs, nice guitar/keyboard melodies and interesting solos.
Raimund who is from Hamburg, Germany has done it all himself on his new solo album “Into my arena” from composing, arranging, performing to producing and the result is really good and entertaining.
Don’t let it scare you away that this is an album of instrumental guitar rock/metal, most people start thinking fast solos and lots of different music parts but Raimund is smart enough to write classic hard songs that feels like normal songs with the typical verse-chorus structure.
He is a fantastic guitarist who’s playing reminds of Michael Schenker and Paul Gilbert, if you should let Tony Martin sing on these songs I would immediately think of Misha Calvin’s 1993 album “Evolution”. Raimund released his first cd “Get it” in 2005 and according to himself, he’s grown up a lot musically on the new album which came out in December 2008.
There are 2 songs with vocals from Michael Keuter, they are the heavy rocker “Don’t you know” which is ok and the fast boogie rocker “Wait for the night” that probably will work better on stage than this boring studio version.
My favorite tracks are the instrumentals “Beautiful sin”, “Rough riff” and “Off-highway” that even has traces of progressive rock, I love the attack and edge in his guitar!

Es gibt sie noch, diese Musiker, die man getrost als Künstler bezeichnen kann. Raimund Burke ist einer davon, dessen ganzes Herzblut in seiner Arbeit steckt und der, dank seiner musikalischen Vielfalt, ein Album nahezu komplett alleine einspielen kann. So stammen sowohl alle Kompositionen von ihm, wie auch die gesamte Instrumentalisierung und die Produktion. Nur an den Gesang hat er sich nicht gewagt und sich deshalb die Hilfe von Michael Keuter geholt.
Aufgrund der Dankesworte und Credits kann man erkennen, dass Burke kein Unbekannter in der Szene ist und so war der Song “Beautiful Sin” ursprünglich für Uli Kusch’s Band gleichen namens gedacht, doch war Burke von der Qualität des Titels so überzeugt, dass er ihn schließlich als Instrumental auf dem eigenen Album beließ. Womit wir auch schon beim Punkt wären. Burke steht musikalisch in der Tradition der großen Gitarrenvirtuosen, wie den Schenker-Brüdern, gemischt mit einem Schuss Gary Moore. Dies dürfte auch kompositorisch sein Selbstverständnis sein und Lieder wie “Rough Riff” oder “Caged” sind Belege dafür. “Into My Arena” erinnert natürlich unweigerlich an MSG und dieser überlange Song, der alle Facetten des Hardrocks enthält, ist ein Monumentalwerk, das in seiner Gesamtheit stellvertretend für die Schaffenskraft von Burke steht. Der Closer “J.A.I.L.S.” zeigt dann nochmals die ruhige Seite/Saite, handelt es sich hier um eine verträumte Akustiknummer.
Dass Burke keine Company im Rücken hat, liegt sicher nicht an mangelnder Qualität, sondern eher daran, dass hier jemand die Fäden seines Tuns bewusst in der Hand behalten will. Ein wirklich starkes Rockalbum.

Raimund Burke est un guitar hero d’origine allemande. Après avoir acquis un sérieux bagage théorique et tourné dans quelques groupes locaux, il a réalisé son premier album solo en 2005, intitulé “Get it”. Il récidive avec ce nouvel album, baptisé “Into my arena”, dont la réalisation en studio a commencé dès 2007.
D’entrée, je vous le dis, c’est 59 minutes de pur bonheur. Cet album est tout simplement excellent, du très très haut niveau. Onze morceaux, neuf instrumentaux, deux chantés, le tout avec une guitare omni présente, toujours au premier plan, mais avec un savant mixage qui fait que le son reste limpide, clair et équilibré.
Amateurs de gros riffs et de batterie faisant jeu égal avec la guitare, vous allez être déçus car ici, on est plutôt dans l’expressivité, la finesse et la justesse.
Avec les premiers titres, on comprend immédiatement qu’on a affaire non seulement à un excellent guitariste, mais surtout à quelqu’un qui a un sens mélodique et harmonique de premier plan.
Son phrasé est superbe, alliant technicité et mélodie. Des montées et des descentes d’enfer, et toujours la note juste pour repartir sur une ligne plus mélodique.
Chaque morceau est marqué par une atmosphère et une influence propre :
Ainsi, après les deux premiers titres plutôt rock speed, on a deux titres tout de suite plus mélodiques et intimistes, avec une impression de tristesse très marquée pour l’intro de la piste 3 “Still searching”.
Les bons morceaux s’enchaînent, jusqu’à la piste 8 “Into my arena”, un superbe morceau, toujours instrumental, de plus de 9 minutes, où on retrouve à la fin une reprise et une digression sur le thème du titre “The spirit carries on” de Dream Theater, présent sur leur album “Scenes frome a memory”. C’est vraiment un magnifique morceau, rempli d’influences, de mélodies et de plages techniques époustouflantes.
Les pistes 9 et 10 sont un peu moins réussies, il s’agit des deux titres chantés. La voix est très rocailleuse, et si la chant reste dans un registre plutôt soft, ces deux titres sont plutôt quelconques pour ce qui est de la partie chant. Mais lorsque la guitare reprend le dessus, on sent tout de suite qu’on a affaire à un maître !
La dernière piste est un morceau calme, construit autour d’arpèges. Très réussi, avec une qualité de jeu incroyable, bien qu’on le sache depuis les premières minutes d’écoute de l’album !
Un excellent album en résumé, technique et mélodique, toujours inovant et passionnant, sans que jamais il ne vire à la démonstration technique gratuite ni ne devienne pénible. Je ne peux qu’en recommander chaudement l’écoute. Un 17/20 amplement mérité.

Ed ecco qui, con furore dalla Germania torna il caparbio Raimund Burke con un disco nuovo di zecca intitolato “Into My Arena”, prodotto dallo stesso Burke e registrato ai Docmaklang Studios. Sono passati due anni dall’ album d’ esordio dell’ artista e devo ammettere che ci sono stati grandi miglioramenti, “Into My Arena” infatti, è un disco maturo, lavorato e grintoso. E’ di stampo Malmsteen, l’ influenza del chitarrista è notevole ma anche il tocco personale di Burke ha una buona parte, “Into My Arena” vanta di riff piacevoli e assoli strabilianti.
Nel disco spiccano canzoni come “Stil Searching”, “Look Forward” e la titletrack, parlando di quest’ ultima, c’è da dire che come canzone rappresentativa è il massimo: suonata bene e composta in maniera lodevole. Un altro ascolto va dedicato a “Wait For The Night” cantata da Michael Keuter. Insomma, il disco è buono, lo stile e la voglia di Raimung Burke sono positive, di questo passo il chitarrista sfornerà bei lavori, speriamo solo non cambi strada.

Ein Virtuose an der Klampfe: Raimund Burke (guitar, bass, drums, piano) spielt hier mit Michael Keuter (v) auf. Das Album wurde komplett in Eigenregie eingespielt! Wer auf exzellentes Gitarrenspiel abfährt, muss hier zuschlagen. Raimund braucht sich nicht hinter Satriani, Gary Moore oder gar Vai zu verstecken, denn was Herr Burke hier bietet, ist alles andere als Hausmannskost. Ein Saitenhexer, welcher Riffs durch die Gegend schiesst wie andere ButterBrote schmieren.
11 Songs, die sich hauptsächlich im Hardrockbereich und mit etwas Blues orientieren. Ein Album im Alleingang einzuspielen, zu produzieren, zu bewerben und zu vertreiben ist schon beachtlich. Respekt!
„Caged“ ist so eine Nummer, wobei es mir als Hörer eiskalt den Rücken runter läuft. Die ansatzlosen Riffs kommen daher wie eine Rock-Rakete. Ausnahme: bei „Into my Arena“ wird etwas mit der Stimme gearbeitet, aber ansonsten ist es ein Instrumentales Superwerk. Das Album fesselt den Hörer durch und durch.
Normalerweise bin ich nicht der Instrumentalfreak, aber hier werde ich voll in den Bann von Raimund Burke gezogen.

Solo albums by guitarists are a common thing in hard rock and metal since a long time and if we already have guitar heroes like Vai, Malmsteen and Satriani, do we really need a Raimund Burke too? Did he just produce another instrumental show-off disc? Does he have something “new” and original up his sleeve? Can he hold his own next to the big ones in the guitar world? We’ll see.
“Into My Arena” is Raimund Burke’s third output, following his debut and a Christmas album. One of the special things about this CD is that Raimund isn’t only doing the guitar parts himself, he also plays the bass guitar, the drums, the keyboard and did the recording, mixing and mastering and I should say he did a very good job on all of those! The only help he got is in the vocal department; singer Michael Keuter, appears on two of the songs, namely “Don’t You Know” and “Wait For The Night”.
My main concern with instrumental (or mainly instrumental anyway) albums is that they often tend to get boring. Luckily Mr. Burke recognized this problem and did something against it! Every track has a lot of twists to it without ever becoming messy, which is a pretty big accomplishment when you note how technical his playing is. He also blends a couple of different styles. Most of the time the music stays in the hard rock area, occasionally he lets a heavy metal riff or bluesy parts sicker through though, we also have a few neo-classical parts, but the main focus is almost always on hard rock. Also add the two tracks with vocals, which are pretty good hard rock tracks by themselves, and the really laid-back closing song “J.A.I.L.S.” and you really can’t complain of lacking diversity.
Let’s return to the questions I asked at the beginning. Raimund Burke isn’t one of the top best guitar players ever when compared to the big names, but he sure knows how to play his instrument better than most others out there! Apart from playing really technically he also gave a lot of attention to the song writing, something most soloists and instrumental bands seem to forget about. Next to that he also puts a really big bunch of emotion into his work.
So in the end this might not have been the best guitarist album I’ve heard so far, but this is really great instrumental hard rock plus two bonus songs with vocals. Recommended to fans of hard rock that like it a bit more technical!

Der Hamburger Raimund Burke ist seit vielen Jahren aktiver Bestandteil der hiesigen Musikszene. Sein neues Album “Into My Arena” beweist erneut, dass dieser Mann ein echter Tausendsassa ist. Er hat alle Songs selber komponiert und wirklich alle Instrumente alleine eingespielt. Und natürlich auch alles produziert. So ist zum Beispiel gleich der Opener “Beautiful Sin” eigentlich für Uli Kusch gedacht gewesen, aber Burke fand den dann so klasse dass er ihn auch für sich verwendete. Im Stil eines Vai oder Satriani genießt man Gitarrenarbeit der Extraklasse.
Die Produktion ist sehr klar und druckvoll. Referenzen zu Könnern wie Gary Moore perlen dann bei “Off-Highway” hervor. Wunderbar ruhig wird es bei “Still Searching” und “Rain Of My Heart”. Das sind durchdachte und elegante Melodiebögen, die immer wieder erstaunen. Man entdeckt bei jedem Anhören neue Sequenzen und ich kann vor soviel Begabung nur meinen imaginären Hut ziehen.
Zu meinem Erstaunen vermisse ich den Gesang überhaupt nicht. Eigentlich habe ich es ja nicht so mit Instrumentalalben, aber hier singen die Instrumente für sich und beschreiben Gefühle und Lebensumstände ohne Worte.
Absoluter Höhepunkt ist der Titeltrack “Into My Arena”. Das knapp zehnminütige Stück fasst Burkes ganzes Können zusammen und bringt es zur Meisterklasse. Nach einem ruhigen Start wird es sehr rockig, mit ganz feinen Akzenten vereint mit dem irrsinnigen Spiel des Nordeutschen. Wirklich extrem gefällig!
Zwei Gesangnummern mit Michael Keuter bedienen dann die Hardrockfraktion, das geht dann so Richtung EUROPE. Ansprechend, aber nicht so klasse wie die reinen Instrumentals.
Burkes Album endet mit dem wunderschönen akustischen “J.a.I.L.s.” Man sitzt so da und …fängt gleich wieder von vorne an. Vielleicht entdeckt man ja noch mehr Schönes auf diesem großartigen Stück Musik !
